Praying the Psalms~Psalm 19 The Heavens Declare the Glory of God!

Some seasons of our lives are times of change, personal stretching and maybe, even a time of loss.

I have been struck this year by the brevity of life. When I count up my years, all that I have lived for and loved seems so small. Even my busiest years seem like a drop in the bucket of eternity.

I am 40 and in 40 more years I will be 80. What seeds have I planted in the ground of God’s kingdom? What roots will go deep? Where will the branches spread and what fruit will last to nurish generations to come?

My time on earth is passing, but the greatness of God is unpassable. His mercy, love, patience and even judgement are constant and unchanging.

This Psalm marinades us in the eternal, faithful nature of God. When we are wasting away, the earth continues. Because God continues, everything keeps moving forward. He is so great that the universe opens for him, before he takes the stage. He sends out the stars as his emissaries and the oceans as his ambassadors. Their constancy reminds us that he never fails.

Let’s pray and thank God for who he is today!

I want to tell you a brief story about the power of praying scripture. When my mother was a little girl, she was invited to Sunday school by a friend. In Sunday school, she was given a plaque of some sort with the last verse of Psalm 19 on it: “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be holy and acceptable to you, Oh Lord, my Rock, my Redeemer.” Every night she would lay in bed and pray this scripture. God answered this prayer in the most profound way. My mother came to Christ in 6th grade and eventually became a faithful disciple of Jesus. She is the most pure-hearted person I know. She is now a pastor’s wife and does ministry in so many ways, blessing so many people. God truly heard the little girl’s prayer of Psalm 19!

Psalm 19 (my words are in blue)

Oh Lord my God,

“The heavens declare your glory, Oh God; the skies proclaim the work of your hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

Speak to me, Oh God! Speak through your creation. Give my heart time to pause and listen and to wait on you. I wait on you, Oh Lord. Speak, heavenly Father. What do you want to say to me today? Spirit of The Living God, fall fresh on me! Speak to me through your Word and through your people. Speak to me through prayer. May my ears be deaf to the lies of the enemy and fully tuned into your direction, Oh Lord!

In the heavens You have pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

May your power and the warmth of your being work through me. The sun pales in comparison to your glory, Oh God. Yet, it speaks of your faithfulness. Day after day you faithfully give us energy, newness, life, warmth and sustenance. Sustain me by your power. Fill me with your power, the power of your Holy Spirit. May I be faithful like you, oh Lord and reflect your glory like the sun.

The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

Give me a love for your Word, Oh Lord. I know your Word is the Spirit of Christ and it is my very weapon against the enemy. I know that without the foundation of your Word, I will fall into deception. Protect me from lies, Oh Lord. Protect me by your Holy Word! Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. May my shield of Faith be strengthened, by hearing and reading your Word. Give me a good routine for reading your Word. Fill my eyes with the light of your truth. I rebuke Satan’s tactics for trying to keep me out of God’s Word, in Jesus name. I command him to leave!

The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Warn me, Oh Lord. I know that you are a Good Father and a Good Father disciplines his children. Be my light and show me the stumbling blocks in my path, in Jesus name. I may not see my own errors and the lies I am believing, but you see all things clearly. Shine your light into my life to eradicate sin and selfishness, in Jesus name !

But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Forgive me for any and all unknown sin in my life, in the name of Jesus! Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”‭‭

May my life reflect your life, Oh Lord. May my word and life match your Word and life. Lord Jesus, I love you and praise your holy name! Fill me with your Spirit that I can live for you! Amen!
