(My 7 year old Isaac helped me write this prayer blog for kids!)
Isaac: Hi Moms and Dads! Are you ready for your kids to learn about Jesus? If you are, try to make your kids early for Sunday School. I hope they have a great day.
Me: Great idea! Why is Sunday School important to you?
Isaac: Because you can learn about Jesus.
Me: We can learn about Jesus at home, too, right?
Isaac: Yeah.
Me: What are ways we can learn about Jesus at home?
Isaac: We can read the Bible. We can read Noah and the Ark and we can read David and Goliath.
Me: Okay. Good thoughts. But, we are going to talk about the Christmas story today-the story of the Wise Men. What are some questions parents should ask their kids before reading the story of the Wise Men? What should kids look for in the Wise Man story while they listen?
Isaac:
- What did the Wise Men follow? (Stomp your feet when you hear this.)
- Look for where Jesus was born. (Kids raise your hand whenever you hear this!)
- Look for when the Wise Men give Jesus special gifts and the names of the special gifts. (Tap your head when you hear this.)
- What did God warn the wise men in a dream about? (Clap your hands to the beat of Jingle Bells when you hear about the dream.)
Me: Great! All kids and parents should always pray before they read the Bible to ask The Holy Spirit to fill them and give them understanding of what they are reading. It can be hard to understand, but God will help us.
Isaac: Father, in Jesus name, please fill the kids minds with the Holy Spirit. Help them understand the Word of God. Please bless them with the blood of Jesus. Please heal anybody if they are sick. Please help kids to not believe in false gods. In Jesus name, Amen.
Mom: Let’s read!
Matthew 2 New International Version (NIV)
The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ”
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
Prayer for kids:
(We pray to the Father in Jesus name.)
Father, in Jesus name, we thank you for the powerful Lord Jesus. Thank you for showing the wise men where you were born. Thank you for leading them on their journey to Jesus. Lead me on my journey to follow Jesus to heaven.
Help me not to be tricked by evil like King Herod. Help me to be like the wise men in the story and to listen to you. Show me your truth. Show me your love. Show me how you want me to live.
Forgive me for things that make you sad, for the sins that separate me from you. Forgive me for lying, disobeying my parents, disobeying God, fighting with my brothers and sisters and _______. Thank you for Jesus and his sacrifice for me. Thank you that he came as a baby to save me when he grew up and died on the cross.
Thank you for loving me, God. Help me to love the way you love. Speak to my heart and show me how much you love me. In Jesus name, Amen.
