Discovering the Mystery of Who I Am in Christ
To afflict the soul means to fast. Every Jewish person knows that is the meaning of "afflict the soul." What is the soul? The soul is the part of the human being that is made up of the mind, the will and the emotions. The soul is the part of us that needs to submit to the Lord. The soul is the part that will go it's own way. The soul is the part that can be wounded or can be encouraged.

Your fasting matters. Don't let the devil tell you it won't do anything! It will tear down his kingdom and build up the Lord's kingdom. God uses humble men and women of God to do his will. When we fast and pray we include God in the relationship, instead of trying to do everything ourselves without him. We cannot win this battle apart from prayer and fasting, and when we do, it may look way different than we anticipate. This is why we must press into the throne of grace. God will give us strength in our inner beings to walk with Christ in our hearts through faith. (Eph 3)

But the birth pangs bring about the birth. The birth is the kingdom of God- something we haven't seen with our eyes or held with our hands or heard with our ears. There is no limit to what Jesus can do! There is no ceiling for the child of God that tells you you can't get any more freedom. We may limit ourselves, but God doesn't limit us in the spirit realm. He wants to bring more freedom, more healing, more intimacy, more hope. Our hope is completely established on the rock of Christ Jesus.
I imagine David, dripping with sweat and tears running in streaks through the dust on his face, kneeling in the dirt with is head bowed. Strength comes into him as he grips his fists tightly, clenches his teeth and with a deep roar from his belly cries out, "Bring me the ephod!"
