I don’t know about you, but the world around me seems more and more unsettling with every passing day. There are pressures from without and pressures from within. Honestly, we are seeing days that are shocking- days that we never thought we would see. It’s not the coronavirus that is shocking to me. It’s not the disturbing state of American politics that is unsettling. It’s not even the ups and downs of the stock market that is causes consternation. What is it that keeps me up at night praying? It is the state of the church. The American or Western church- the family of God – is losing its faith.
We seem to be more and more concerned with living for this world than living for the next. We are forgetting how to love and how to forgive. We are forgetting – or maybe we have a generation of Christians who never really knew in the first place – the power of God to heal and transform a life.
This is not a blog of doom and gloom. This is a blog of hope. I want you to know that God is not only still on the throne, he is still changing lives. God is still healing. God is still reconciling. God is still working miracles and revealing himself to his children.
Jesus, during a time when he was getting ready to face the most difficult day in the history of mankind told his disciples this:
“A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:32-33
When Jesus knew he would be abandoned, when he knew he would be alone – he knew he would overcome. Not only did he know he would overcome, but he tells his disciples that they will face difficult times. Why? To scare them? No. He told them this so that when the difficult times came, they would be encouraged that Jesus knew ahead of time and warned them. And to top it all off, he told the men who would reject and abandon him – he told the people whose sin was sending him to the cross- that he would overcome the world for them.
We serve a God who knows the future. He knew in advance that we would live in a world of trouble and he told us ahead of time. He told us that he would overcome the world. We are to take heart in this!
