Praying the Psalms~ Psalm 11

If the foundations are destroyed, what are the righteous to do?

Here is a verse from Psalm 11 that is famously quoted over and over of late. This Psalm seems to speak to a time and a people who feel like their society is falling apart. There is no apparent place to go, except, “Run for the hills!”

David’s question is, “How can you say to me, ‘Run for the hills?’ ” And his question is not based on the fact that he thinks the advice is ill-given. David seems to say, “How do you think that running for the hills will help?”

Beyond a doubt, there are moments in history and in our lives where we find ourselves in a place where there is no where to hide in the natural. People are tracking your every move “in the shadows” or “in secret” plotting. The enemy of our soul is shooting his arrows of temptation and his lies at us, as well.

We look in despair, at our nation, at the world and say, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

At this point, David truly says, “In the Lord I put my trust.” I grew up as a child in the 1980’s. We saw the iron curtain fall. We lived in a time of relative peace. The focus of Christian teaching became pretty commercialized. We lost the urgency of our need for God. We watched Indiana Jones and laughed at the characterized Nazi villains. All of this evil was in the past. The world had learned it’s lessons and all was well.

In fact, what could possibly happen to America? In the 80’s and 90’s people wondered about Revelation and prophecy. Why isn’t America obvious in prophecy they wondered? How could such a great nation that stands for God, good and morality around the globe not be in prophecy? How could it all happen? These types of questions led people to say things like, “Well, then the only other option would be for the rapture to happen at the height of America’s glory. With all the Christians out of the way, then it would be easy for the non-Christians to follow the Anti-christ.” This sounded good, because it meant all the Christians got out before anything bad happened. (It doesn’t matter what happens around the rest of the world…as long as America is okay.)

This kind of blindness assumed that the constitution itself and not our faith would protect us from disintegration as a society. My generation slipped into a pop-culture induced coma. Everyone looked to the future as bright and embraced every new technological advancement as good, never knowing what it would be like for the government to be able to see where you are every minute of the day.

No one assumed what the bible says to be true. “We all like sheep have gone astray, each man to his own way and the Lord has laid upon him the iniquity of us all.” We assumed that we weren’t the sheep going astray. We embraced movies and music that celebrated sin and mocked God and cried, “Grace! Grace!” Meanwhile, each decade slipped further and further into deception and the church fell asleep at the wheel.

Is this rambling? Maybe because the slow descent into the foundations of our nation being destroyed happened in such a haphazard way. Maybe we stopped paying attention and lent our hearts to the media to tell us what to believe and what to want and how to behave. Maybe we rambled down the road of destruction like children led by the pied piper?

Now, we still have a general sense of security, but those of us who have been around for several decades or more can see and hear and feel in our spirits that something is happening. Something is unraveling. The foundations are being destroyed. What are we to do?

Here is where God calls us up. He says, through David’s prayer, ” Trust.”

What does that look like?  Let’s pray like David and ask God, as our foundations are being shaken to protect us, lead us and vindicate.

Faith in the Lord’s Righteousness

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

11 In the Lord I put my trust;
How can you say to my soul,
“Flee as a bird to your mountain”?
For look! The wicked bend their bow,
They make ready their arrow on the string,
That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.
If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?

The Lord is in His holy temple,
The Lord’s throne is in heaven;
His eyes behold,
His eyelids test the sons of men.
The Lord tests the righteous,
But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
Upon the wicked He will rain coals;
Fire and brimstone and a burning wind
Shall be the portion of their cup.

For the Lord is righteous,
He loves righteousness;
His countenance beholds the upright.

Prayer Time:

Oh Lord, in you I put my trust; as I look around the world, I am dismayed. There is no other place for me to put my trust, except for in you.

So many say to me,
“Flee as a bird to your mountain.”  But, why do they say this? Why do men put their trust in things and in places? I know that I have no where else to go except into you.

When I am afraid, I trust in you. When I am unsure, I trust in you. I command my soul to trust in you. When others mock and deride, I trust in you. Help my unbelief. Help me to not take my eyes off of you when the world gets crazy and things fall apart.

For look! The wicked bend their bow,
They make ready their arrow on the string,
That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.

Lord, there are so many who scheme to bring down believers. There are so many who gossip and use their words to destroy. The enemy Satan is coming in like a flood. Please, Oh Lord, raise up a standard against him.

I will be strong in you, Oh Lord and in the power of your might. I put on the whole armor of God, that I may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  Lord you say that I do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore I take up the whole armor of God, that I may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

I Stand therefore, I gird my waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness, in Jesus name.  I put on my feet the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, Oh Lord, I take the shield of faith with which I will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. I ask Lord for you to help my unbelief and increase my faith as I face many difficulties and the enemy’s tactics, in Jesus name. I pray that you teach me to walk in faith and not by sight. I am so moved by my feelings and by the things I see and hear. Lord, encourage me to read your word so I can grow in faith, since faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. I ask for your divine revelation through your Spirit as I read your Word.

And I take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance. I pray for all the saints in Jesus name. I pray for your power to come over me. You did not give me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.

If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do? Teach us what to do as the foundations of our society are destroyed. Teach me and establish my paths, Oh Lord.

Lord, you are in your holy temple, I am your temple. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In this age of destruction and deception, may I honor your temple and not allow myself to be polluted by the world. Oh Lord, commune with me in your temple, in your most holy place. Be exalted in this temple, Oh Lord, my God!

Oh Lord your throne is in heaven;
Your eyes behold,
Your eyelids test the sons of men.
Oh Lord, you test the righteous. Please forgive me for my weaknesses, and give me guidance to pass the difficult tests in this life. May I walk in your favor and in your honor, in Jesus name!

The  wicked and the one who loves violence Your soul hates, oh Lord. Help me to understand this truth. I know you died for the wicked and you died for all of us in our wretchedness. However, there are those who will not turn to you. There are those who will not acknowledge you. Have mercy, Oh Lord on those who know not what they do. Turn hearts to you, oh Lord. In Jesus name, I pray for your miraculous intervention in the lives of these people I know who have turned from you:

(List those who you want to ask God for mercy for. Ask for mercy the way that Abram asked for Sodom and Gommorah.)

Lord, Upon the wicked you will rain coals;
Fire and brimstone and a burning wind
Shall be the portion of their cup. You have done this over the ages to societies who turn their back on you. Many do not understand your ways with kings and with nations. Oh Lord, turn our nation back. Turn the church back from wickedness. May the righteous not perish with the wicked, oh Lord. Make provision for your people all over the earth, in Jesus name. If you must bring judgement, help us to trust in you even more, Oh Lord. We live in such wicked times. Please give and my family and friends strength, endurance, guidance and more than I even know to ask, Oh Lord. Deliver us from evil, in Jesus name.

For you, Oh Lord are righteous,

You love righteousness;
Your countenance beholds the upright.

In Jesus name, oh my Father, may I bring glory to your name and may my life in Christ bring you pleasure.

I love you. Thank you for loving me. In Jesus name, Amen.
