21 Day Challenge in God’s Word

What is the biggest obstacle that stands in the way between you and reading God’s Word? Please post in the comments! I really want to know!

I would say that I am the biggest obstacle that keeps me from God’s Word. I feel guilt, because I don’t “get into the Word” as much as “I should.” Maybe you have a daily quiet time, but it’s more of a duty.

God wants to talk to you! He wants to share beautiful truth with you and reveal to you deep and personal things that will transform your life. He wants to connect with you and breathe his very presence into you.

I was challenged by Anita Keaggy to start the 21 Day Challenge, and since I do these things best with friends, I am asking you to join me! I’ve heard it takes 3 days to form a habit and 21 days to break a habit. By reading 1 chapter out of the gospel of John each day for the next 21 days, we will be forming a new habit of drawing close to The Lord through his Word and breaking the habit of hit and miss, guilt filled Bible reading.

Today we will start with John 1! Ask Jesus to reveal himself to you, grab your Bible and start reading! šŸ™‚ If you have a pen or pencil handy, underline things that jump out at you. Write special revelations down in the margins. Highlight passages you may want to memorize. Have fun! If you are joining me for this, please comment at the bottom and share it with a friend so you can hold each other accountable. You can get my blog in your email, for ease of reading. Also, Join my Gideon’s Rising Facebook Group to discuss your daily Bible reading with other readers. šŸ™‚

Blessings!

John 1New International Version – UK (NIVUK)

The Word became flesh

1Ā In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.Ā 2Ā He was with God in the beginning.Ā 3Ā Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.Ā 4Ā In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.Ā 5Ā The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcomeĀ it.

6Ā There was a man sent from God whose name was John.Ā 7Ā He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.Ā 8Ā He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9Ā The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.Ā 10Ā He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him.Ā 11Ā He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.Ā 12Ā Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – 13Ā children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14Ā The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15Ā (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, ā€˜This is the one I spoke about when I said, ā€œHe who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.ā€ā€™)Ā 16Ā Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.Ā 17Ā For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.Ā 18Ā No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God andĀ is in the closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist denies being the Messiah

19Ā Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leadersĀ in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.Ā 20Ā He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, ā€˜I am not the Messiah.’

21Ā They asked him, ā€˜Then who are you? Are you Elijah?’

He said, ā€˜I am not.’

ā€˜Are you the Prophet?’

He answered, ā€˜No.’

22Ā Finally they said, ā€˜Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’

23Ā John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, ā€˜I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ā€œMake straight the way for the Lord.ā€ā€™

24Ā Now the Pharisees who had been sentĀ 25Ā questioned him, ā€˜Why then do you baptise if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?’

26Ā ā€˜I baptise withĀ water,’ John replied, ā€˜but among you stands one you do not know.Ā 27Ā He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’

28Ā This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.

John testifies about Jesus

29Ā The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, ā€˜Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!Ā 30Ā This is the one I meant when I said, ā€œA man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.ā€Ā 31Ā I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptising with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.’

32Ā Then John gave this testimony: ā€˜I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.Ā 33Ā And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptise with water told me, ā€œThe man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptise with the Holy Spirit.ā€Ā 34Ā I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.’

John’s disciples follow Jesus

35Ā The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.Ā 36Ā When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, ā€˜Look, the Lamb of God!’

37Ā When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.Ā 38Ā Turning round, Jesus saw them following and asked,Ā ā€˜What do you want?’

They said, ā€˜Rabbi’ (which means ā€˜Teacher’), ā€˜where are you staying?’

39Ā ā€˜Come,’ he replied,Ā ā€˜and you will see.’

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40Ā Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.Ā 41Ā The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ā€˜We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ).Ā 42Ā And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said,Ā ā€˜You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when translated, is Peter).

Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael

43Ā The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him,Ā ā€˜Follow me.’

44Ā Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.Ā 45Ā Philip found Nathanael and told him, ā€˜We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’

46Ā ā€˜Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’ Nathanael asked.

ā€˜Come and see,’ said Philip.

47Ā When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him,Ā ā€˜Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.’

48Ā ā€˜How do you know me?’ Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered,Ā ā€˜I saw you while you were still under the fig-tree before Philip called you.’

49Ā Then Nathanael declared, ā€˜Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.’

50Ā Jesus said,Ā ā€˜You believeĀ because I told you I saw you under the fig-tree. You will see greater things than that.’ 51Ā He then added,Ā ā€˜Very truly I tell you,Ā youĀ will see ā€œheaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending onā€Ā the Son of Man.’

  1. For my own bible reading time I get side tracked so easily. I enjoy bible reading with Ethan in his Literature class, but then forget to read on my own. I will join you in reading the 21 days.

    1. I think getting sidetracked is A problem that many people can relate to. I find that my phone sidetracks me. It’s always with me, so when I am trying to read my Bible it’s so easy to get tempted to pick it up.

  2. My morning routine …. get up, head for the coffee machine and turn it on, back to the bathroom, splash water on my face, back to the kitchen, fix the coffee, sit down and pop open the Word. Usually start with Psalms … then I pray asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to me His Truths. This is all happening before I am fully awake so I know that only God is in control. LOL When I am not able to do this — I feel incomplete for the rest of the day, anxious … a good morning is spending at least an hour in His Word and prayer. šŸ™‚ Without this daily injection of God’s Word, the rest of your day is without strength.
