I am inspired to pray through the Psalms this year. Many people emphasize reading through the Psalms, but the psalms were written as prayers and worship to the Lord. In praying through the Psalms, we are praying as David did, a man after God’s own heart. David wrote most of the Psalms, and some were written by Moses and the sons of Korah and others. All are scripture. Praying through them will help us put them to heart and to connect with God by praying his Word.
Moses and other Godly people in scripture reminded God of his Word in times when they needed an intervention. This is a powerful tool, as the Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit, the only offensive weapon in the armor of God. Each prayer will include the Psalm of the day, as seen in the scriptures, and then a prayer version which you can use, if you are not comfortable praying scripture on your own, yet. You will see that as you do it, and are attentive to the Holy Spirit, you will feel more and more comfortable!
Psalm 1
New King James Version (NKJV)
BOOK ONE: Psalms 1—41
The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
PRAYER Version:
Father, in Jesus name, you Bless the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
Father, may I be this man or woman, in Jesus name. May I not take advice from ungodly people or be deceived by the thinking of this world. Forgive me for times I have done this. Give me wisdom to know your ways and your paths. Reveal to me what counsel is ungodly and what advice is given out of fear, manipulation or control. Help me to seek out godly counsel and put godly people around me in my life to listen to. Forgive me for times I have rebelled against the truth of godly counsel.
Help me to stand in the path of righteousness, not in the path of sinners. Give me godly friends to be with and to learn from.
Keep me from sinning by mocking and scorning those who are doing good. Help me to rejoice with the good and not to mock it. Forgive me for times I have gotten into arguments with people and have been mocking or scornful, in Jesus name.
Father, the person who pleases you delights in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
Teach me to meditate on your Word. This world teaches meditation, but I want to be guided by your Holy Spirit to meditate on your Word.
Give me a love for your Word and plant it deep in my heart so I can be like a tree, Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever I do shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Right now, Father God, I pray for those in my life who do not know you. I ask for your divine intervention in their lives that they would not suffer judgement, but that they would turn to Jesus, repent and stand in the congregation of the righteous. (Pray for individuals here….)
God, there are so many opportunities to sin and turn from you. Please keep my feet on the narrow road. Light my path with your truth and help me to live in repentance when I sin against you.
For you, Lord, knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Know my ways, Lord, and establish my paths. May the truth of your hope ring throughout the earth and may many people repent and not perish, for you say in your Word that it is your will that none should perish, but all come to a knowledge of Jesus Christ. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. For you so loved the world, that you gave your one and only son, that whosoever believes in Jesus should not perish, but have everlasting life.
May I be a part of your holy will of righteousness coming forth on the earth, Father, in Jesus name, Amen.
