For kids! 8th Day of Christmas Prayer- My hands

Look at your hands. How big are they? What can you do with your hands?

What good things can you do?

What bad things can someone do with their hands?

Have you ever had to do something with your hands that you felt unsure about?

What things have you been asked to do that you needed help to accomplish or get done?

When Mary was just a young teenager, she was asked to do an amazing, but difficult thing. Do you know what she was asked to do?

Let’s read the Bible verses that tell us about Mary’s job from God. Listen to tell us what her attitude was about God’s job for her.

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most Highwill overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Who told Mary about her job?

What did the angel say about Mary? (She was highly favored by God.) What does highly favored mean?

What was Mary’s job from God? (To have baby Jesus and be his mommy.)

What came over Mary to put Jesus inside of her? (The Holy Spirit and the power of the Most High. )

What was Mary’s attitude towards God’s job for her? (I am the Lord’s servant. May your word be me be fulfilled.)

Mary was chosen by God to be baby Jesus’s mommy. She was very young when this happened to her. God trusted her with Jesus. Why do you think he did trusted her?

(Some ideas may be, he knew she would do a good job. He knew her heart. He knew his power would rest on her and he would be with her to help her. )

God gives all of us jobs to help people know about him. We all have jobs for Jesus, like Mary. What are some ideas of jobs? (Showing people God’s love, sharing the gospel or good news about Jesus, being honest, helping the poor, telling the truth.)

Let’s pray and ask God to help us with the jobs he wants to give us!

“Father, in Jesus name, I thank you for considering me worthy to do your work in the world. I know you trust me with special jobs, because you want to show me how much you want to work in my life and in the lives of others around me.

Father God, you gave Mary the special honor of carrying Jesus in her and then raising him and being a great Mommy to him. Please be with me, the way you were with Mary. Help me to trust you and to have good attitudes about the things you want me to do.

God, I get scared sometimes and feel overwhelmed by the jobs I have to do. I need you to help me to do the jobs with joy and with praise in my mouth. I praise you for the work you want to do in me, even when it seems difficult at first.

Teach me to do the things you want me to do and to speak what you want me to say. I need your power to fill my mouth and heart with truth.

Help me to look up to Mary and Joseph and to know that if they can do difficult things in your power, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

In Jesus name, Amen”
