To afflict the soul means to fast. Every Jewish person knows that is the meaning of "afflict the soul." What is the soul? The soul is the part of the human being that is made up of the mind, the will and the emotions. The soul is the part of us that needs to submit to the Lord. The soul is the part that will go it's own way. The soul is the part that can be wounded or can be encouraged.
40 Days of Prayer and Fasting – Day 28 – Pray for Our Pastors and Teachers
Your fasting matters. Don't let the devil tell you it won't do anything! It will tear down his kingdom and build up the Lord's kingdom. God uses humble men and women of God to do his will. We cannot win this battle apart from prayer and fasting, and when we do, it may look way different than we anticipate. This is why we must press into the throne of grace. God will give us strength in our inner beings to walk with Christ in our hearts through faith. (Eph 3)
