21 Days of Fasting and Prayer for Children and Grandchildren – Day 1

In the scriptures, when God’s people wanted a breakthrough, they called a fast. Every time I have fasted, God has answered by breaking chains, setting people free and healing what seems unable to be healed.

Why is it that I am not eager to dive into a new fast, every time I see a need for a move of God? Probably because I like being comfortable and eating makes me comfortable. We should always be led by the Lord into fasting, not by guilt or because someone else is doing the fast. However, we need to acknowledge that our flesh will not always agree that fasting is a good idea. So, until we can differentiate between our fleshly feelings and the leading of the Lord, it may be good to spend some extra time seeking God’s will on what he wants us to do.

I have wrestled with the Lord for some time now, when he leads me to fast. But, like Jacob wrestling with the Lord, I am tired and need a touch from God. So, as I am ready to release myself from my own personal agenda into the Lord’s leading, I am writing this blog series.

Also, I am picking up writing this on September 10, 2025 after the news of the Charlie Kirk assassination. It feels as if our society has turned a page and we are now in a new chapter. How much more should we devote ourselves to prayer and fasting, when things are full of hatred, terribly bleak and those around us need Jesus?

How do you fast? In scripture, we see different types of fasting. We see fasting from all food in some cases, and in other passages people will fast from “choice” food for a long time. This can be sweets and rich, lavish foods. Whichever fast you do, it is important to stay hydrated with fresh water during your fast. Always consult a doctor, if you have questions about whether or not you should fast. Finally, spiritual fasting is not a weight loss program or a health program. It can be physically healthy and it can cause some weight loss, but they type of weight we are seeking to lose in a spiritual fast is the burden of sin, the weight of the enemy’s lies and the heaviness that comes from the chains of guilt, depression and fear.

This 21 day fast will be dedicated to God’s protection and deliverance of our children and grandchildren. In scripture, we can see a pattern of the enemy’s hatred for our children. Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy the next generation spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. God’s heart is for our children and grandchildren is to walk with him and to know him. God wants our children to stand in victory and to be wholly devoted to him.

Today, my prayer for my children and grandchildren is from Psalm 103:1-5. Let’s use that scripture as our springboard for prayer.

Psalm 103:1-5

Praise the Lord, my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Prayer adaptation v. 1-5 – Lord, I praise your name! I command my soul to praise you, even in the storms of life. I say that I will praise the Lord and I will remember all of your benefits. What are your benefits?

Firstly, Lord, you heal all our diseases, and the diseases of our children – yes, Lord, you do! I thank you for your healing power. I pray that you will heal my children from any and all sickness and disease. Let the healing of the resurrection power of Jesus Christ be upon my children and grandchildren. Amen.

Secondly, Lord, you forgive ALL our sins, and the sins of our children – yes, Lord, you do! Lord, you see our hearts. Thank you for your forgiveness. Please forgive my children and grandchildren for any sins that dominate and tempt. Please forgive them for any unknown sin they are living in. Break the power of that sin and bring about hearts of repentance. Soften their hearts to you, Lord. Let my children see your heart to forgive. Also, help them to walk in forgiveness, as they are forgiven. In Jesus’ name.

Thirdly, Lord, you redeem our lives from the pit. You are the redeemer of our children and grandchildren – yes, Lord, you are! Lord, whatever attacks the enemy is bringing against my children, whatever plans he has made for them, please redeem them from those attacks. Bring the redemption power of the living God to my children and grandchildren. No matter how deep the pit they are in, Lord, your hand is not too short to save. I declare this in Jesus’ mighty name!

Lord, You crown us with love and compassion and satisfy our desires with good things. You crown my children with your love. You have compassion on my children and grandchildren. You heart is for their restoration and redemption, not their destruction, in Jesus’ name. I pray that you will allow them to see the blessing and calling they have in the Living God. Open the eyes of their hearts to see how the Lord sees them. Drive out their fears with the love of the Lord. Lord, satisfy my children with the things of God. Let them thirst for righteousness and be filled with your truth. In Jesus’ name. Thank you so much for your act of pouring out your love on my family, Oh God.

Hear my prayers, Lord. Break the chains off of my children. Set them free and strengthen them with your loving kindness. See me Lord, as I begin this fast. Open the doors of heaven and send the rain of your Spirit down on me. Strengthen me for this fast, Lord. I pray you will teach me what I need to know about myself. Lead me in how to pray for those I love, in particular, my children.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
