Praying the Psalms~ Psalm 8 Praise!

Whew! When praying through the Psalms, I find them coming a little too close to home. Often we think of going to the Psalms for an uplifting read in God’s Word, but many of them are gut-wrenching reminders about our frail human condition and our need for constant prayer without ceasing.

However, we get a break from the heavy duty prayers in Psalm 8, with a refocusing reminder of God’s majesty and power. I love this psalm, because when we fix our eyes on the author and perfecter of our faith, we are not oh, so desperate in our dark times. Staying focused on who Jesus is and our redemption on the cross puts the effects of sin and death in the world in focus. So, take time today to bask in the glory of praising God and refocus your heart and thoughts on how big and mighty our God is! He is able to do more than we can ask or imagine!

Psalm 8

For the director of music. According to gittith.

 A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?[c]

You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e]
and crowned them[f] with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their[g] feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Extended prayer time:

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

I praise your name! Your name is a strong tower, the righteous run in and are safe. Lord, your name is powerful. Even the wicked use it as a swear word. They cannot ignore it or hide from your name. It is always before us. I lift up your name. Your name is Holy, mighty, and from everlasting to everlasting. You are the great I AM. You are outside of time and space. All things were created by you and through you and for you! I exalt your name above every name on earth.

(Take time right now to review all the glorious things the Father has done for you. Try to name at least 10 things reflecting his character and his nature that molds us into the image of Christ!)

You have set your glory in the heavens.Your glory is all around me. In the snow, in the thunder, from the rising to the setting of the sun, your glory is all around me. You are glorified in nature, in the deer running, in the lioness hunting her prey, in the ants working together, in the life cycles of the earth, your glory is eternally proclaimed.  May I bring glory to your name in everything I say and do. May my life reveal the truth of your life. Be magnified in me, Oh Lord.

Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger. Give me the faith of a little child and the praise that is perfected in faith. Move in my life and remove the boundaries that keep me from childlike belief, in Jesus name! Lord God, raise up the children to praise you mightily. Raise all of us up like children in perfect praise. May the praises of your people throw down the strongholds of old. It says in your word that the sins of the forefathers are visited on the third and fourth generations, but righteousness is for a thousand generations. May your righteousness be in my children’s children’s children. May your life and your praise flow through my family from now on and forever more. Silence the enemies of God and dismantle Satan’s revenge and schemes with the praises of our children and the praise of our own lips, in Jesus name! Throw down the enemy, in Jesus name!

When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them? I am in awe of your love and your care, oh Lord! I am in awe that in all this that you have made, it is for mankind that you have sent your only son. Oh Lord, fill me with the knowledge of your love and your will. Fill me to overflowing, in Jesus name. I want to dwell in your love. I want to know your care in ways that change my life and the world around me.

You have made me a little lower than the angels
and crowned me with glory and honor.
You made me ruler over the works of my hands;
you put everything under my feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, may I live in the truth of who you have made me to be. Do not let the enemy steal my identity in Christ. You have given me dominion over the world you have put me in. May I take good care of the things in my life, oh Lord, my God. Lord, teach me to walk in the authority of Christ in my life. God, may I walk in the power you have ordained for me in Christ Jesus. May I walk in obedience to the one who loves me and who has given up all things for me that I may be saved!

Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!
